PAUL RICHARDS

• Biography •

Music Style: CHUNKY, FUNKY, SEXY, STYLISH HOUSE

"When you feel that ripple of anticipation buzz through the club and then you drop the beat and the crowd pop's like a champagne cork…that's what it's all about." - Paul Richards

Paul's philosophy is 'music is life, this guy eats, sleeps and breathes music. He started Djing in Ibiza 5 years ago when a friend who was booked to play at Es Paradis had one too many and could not stand up! Not wishing to miss and opportunity or see the Clockwork Orange crowd disappointed Paul grabbed the records and jumped on the decks much to the bafflement of the promoter. The crowd response was amazing and Paul quickly landed himself a set of gigs that summer in Es Paradis and Mambo.

His next break was at Vega in Demark through a promoter that shopped at the record store where he worked, he again wowed
the crowds leading to regular bookings at Ideal Bar, Park Cafe and Kransnapolsky where a promoter from Hanover Grand heard him play and gave him his first UK gig.

The bookings continued to grow in Scandinavia, Paul was a regular at Nasa, Pan Club & Vega in Denmark and Disco Let in Sweden. The break at Hanover Grand also lead to plenty of UK bookings, 1998-1999 was a crucial year in Paul's development with sets at: Cafe De Paris, Leisure Lounge, Sound Republic, Denim Bar, Butterfly Bar and of course back to Ibiza to play again at Es Paradis and Mambo.

Then the really big break came when Felix from Basement Jaxx heard Paul play at Sound Republic and asked him to come on their UK tour as resident DJ that summer. The tour was a great success and Paul encountered his greatest professional challenge so far at a 2000 person venue in Leicester where an over enthusiastic fan jumped on stage and tried to shake Paul's hand. Instead he knocked the needle off the record, 2000 people stood in silence and waited.

Cool, calm and collected Paul just took the record back to the start, dropped it again and the crowd went wild. Unsurprisingly after this the bookings started to flood in - Renaissance and Work at the Cross, L'Equipe and Home in UK, Miss Moneypennies and Mambo in Ibiza and continued residencies in Sweden and Denmark.

In the summer of 2000 Paul was given the opportunity to play at the MTV Ibiza festival in the VIP area packed with 1000 music industry execs and journalists and that's the moment when it all changed….. "…my stomach flipped when I got behind the decks, looked down and saw Boy George, Jeremy Healy, Erick Morillo and Smokin Jo all hanging out at the front." As usual the minute he started playing the music took him to a place no-one can touch him, the crowd went nuts and the minute he was off Erick and Jo both made their way over and told Paul, "..do it mate go professional."

Not one to argue with his musical heroes Paul quit the day job on returning to London…and quickly landed gigs at Creamfields, Misdemeanors - the industry showcase at The End and Ministry of Sound where he played alongside Smokin Jo…..word had started to spread.

By the beginning of 2001Paul was entertaining the crowds all over Europe, Fabric, Ministry, Space in Ibiza who loved his first set there so much they immediately booked him for this summer's closing party. In March headlining the after party for MTV Fashionably Loud in Milan, other performers inc. Basement Jaxx, Wheatus, Anastasia and Lisa Loud.

Unsuprisingly by the middle of this year he had been snapped up by both ITB and Subliminal records, his musical talent, passion and unique performance clearly making him stand out, lets face it how many DJ's do you know that have 3 decks on the go and pop into the crowd for a quick boogie…..

When he's not on the decks he's in the studio full time, Paul's first single 'Got to have your Love' has just been finished, and signed to Subliminal records. Erick picked up on Paul's talent from the start and so has signed him as a developing artist, with 3 singles expected by the 1st quarter of 2002 and an album by the end of next year.

"Paul Richards sets dance floors alight with an unstoppable kinetic energy and a vibrance that will imprint a whole new rhythm on the meaning of house, watch out boys and girls, this guy means business." - Erick Morillo
